Escalating Odds Mission #5 - Strategies and Tactics

This series of articles is about sharing some insights into getting ready for Arc40k and the challenging missions that are presented each year. But as we approach the day of hobby destiny 4-5 March, it’s time to focus more on just play testing and learning as much as you can with your army on the Battle Field.

So now we are giving you access to Mission #5 Escalating Odds - All the missions have been updated to be in line with the format being used for 2023. So be sure to download the .pdf at the end of this article.

It’s no secret, that it’s important for Warhammer 40,000 players the world over, to have a well thought through plan with effective strategies and tactics. This can often mean the difference between victory and defeat.

The so with the two primary objectives in Escalating Odds - Raising the Stakes and Quartermaster - offer ample opportunity for players to gain or be denied significant amount of victory points, but it requires careful planning and execution.

The "Raising the Stakes" objective is a progressive objective that rewards players for controlling objective markers at the end of each Command phase. The more objective markers a player controls, the more victory points they can score.

To maximize points from this objective, players must make control of objective markers a priority. This can be achieved through aggressive play, pushing forward and securing objectives while also making sure to keep their own objectives defendable. It's important to remember that the conditions for scoring victory points change throughout the battle, so players must adjust their tactics accordingly.

You can’t let up on putting pressure on your opponent and seize control of objectives as early as possible in the game and then consolidate. Countering any attempts they make to wrest control or contest any objectives thus impacting on your ability to score maximum points each eligible turn.

The difficulty with this mission is that it requires you to exert dominance across the entire board - restricting or giving your opponent as few options as possible to move or maneuver to get close enough to contest objectives. Doing that and still ensuring that the game is fun or enjoyable is the real trick with maximising points - not just in game play! So maybe ensuring you can score more points than your opponent early and then grind out the fight is the better option.

The "Quartermaster" objective rewards players for keeping enemy units out of their deployment zone. To maximize points from this objective, players must have a solid defense plan in place and ensure their deployment zone is well guarded.

A mix of ranged and melee units, along with a well-placed fortification, could provide effective defense. Additionally, players must be aware of their opponent's army composition and make adjustments to their defense accordingly.

In this mission, both players receive 1 Battle-forged CP bonus at the start of each Command phase, so it's important to make the most of these extra command points. Players can use these command points to activate stratagems, give re-rolls, or activate abilities that help secure objectives or defend their deployment zone.

So, maximizing points in the Escalating Odds mission requires careful planning and execution of both offensive and defensive strategies. Players must prioritize control of objective markers and keep enemy units out of their deployment zone.

With a solid plan in place and effective execution of tactics, you might be able to maximize the chances of victory and achieve these mission objectives… Good Luck!
