ArcOpen Unit Category 2024

ArcFest brings together enthusiasts of tabletop miniatures, showcasing craftsmanship and hobby excellence from across Australia.

Units, squads, Gangs… a group of models displayed as a single entry.

Among the categories that ignite the passion and broaden the scope of the ArcOpen competition is the Unit Category, where squads, squadrons, gangs, or units of three or more fantasy/futuristic models take center stage.

From skirmishing warriors to mighty warbands, this category encapsulates the essence of tabletop gaming. But it also offers a diverse range of canvases that challenge painters to present a coherent and cohesive grouping of models.

In this article we get to explore the Gold and Silver medal-winning entries that the judges felt represented the essence of the category while presenting an entry of the highest painting standards.

Gold Medalists

Richard Gibson's Blackstone Fortress Adventurers emerged as a group of diverse models skillful painted with a great deal attention to detail. This intrepid band of adventurers, each with their own unique personality and background, stand ready to brave the perils of the ancient Blackstone Fortress seeking to uncover its secrets. Richards's meticulous brushwork and careful color choices brought these characters to life - they were a real standout in the Unit Category.

Andrew Buckley's A.R.F. Troopers marched into victory with their unwavering determination and combat prowess. Andrew's expert handling of colour, gradients and weathering techniques imbued these troopers with a sense of realism and grit, reflecting the harsh conditions of futuristic warfare.

Highly crafted and detailed bases set the scene and the warm glows contrast well with the cool greenish colours of the models. Each trooper bore the scars of battle, a testament to Andrew's commitment to storytelling throughout his miniature painting.

Silver Medalists

Richard Gibson continued his streak of success in this category with his Goliath Rust Giants Gang, a formidable force of hulking brutes, stimmed and mechanical monstrosities. Richard's smooth skin tones, subtle weathering and damage effects added depth and character to these hulking figures, making them a formidable presence in the underhive.

Jason Poley's Goblin Underworlds brought a touch of whimsy and mischief to the Silver Medal ranks. Jason's skillful blending and highlighting techniques brought out the personality and charm of each goblin. With their dynamic poses were accentuated by the uniquely vibrant colour palette - making Jason's goblins a joy to behold.
